Maureen Chadwick – Diabetes Conversationalist

The person behind The Diabetes Lady® programme.

I’ve spent years sitting with people living with diabetes — listening to their stories, their frustrations, their fears, and their victories. Those conversations shaped me far more than any textbook or clinical guideline ever could.

I learned that people don’t need more jargon.

They don’t need more pressure.

They don’t need to be spoken at.

They need someone who listens.

Someone who explains things clearly.

Someone who helps them make sense of it all.

Someone who sees the person, not the numbers.

That’s why I became a Diabetes Conversationalist.

My Background

I worked for many years as a Senior Diabetes Specialist Nurse, supporting people across all stages of their diabetes journey. I loved the people, the conversations, and the moments where something finally “clicked” for someone who’d been struggling for years.

But I also saw the limits of the clinical system:

• appointments too short

• information too rushed

• people leaving more confused than when they arrived

• shame and overwhelm getting in the way of learning

I knew there had to be a better way — one that centred the person, not the protocol.

I never felt like a “nurse” in the way people imagine.

Not the uniform.

Not the hierarchy.

Not the “I talk, you listen” dynamic.

I was the person people talked to.

The one they could breathe with.

The one who sat beside them, not in front of them.

I was their supporter, their translator, their sounding board —

someone they could have a real conversation with about their diabetes, without fear of judgement or being told off.

That’s why “Diabetes Conversationalist” fits me better than any job title I ever had.

It describes what I actually did — and who I actually was — in those rooms.

My Approach

I use plain language, everyday metaphors, and calm, clear explanations to make diabetes feel understandable — not intimidating.

I believe:

• you are the expert in your own life

• diabetes education should feel like a conversation, not a lecture

• clarity builds confidence

• overwhelm shuts learning down

• support should feel human, not clinical

My job isn’t to tell you what to do.

It’s to help you understand your diabetes so you can take back control — your way.

Why I Built This Programme

I wanted to create a space where people could learn without pressure, shame, or confusion.

A space where information is clear.

Where questions are welcome.

Where you feel understood.

Where you can breathe.

This programme is the result of years of real conversations with real people — turned into something simple, accessible, and genuinely supportive.

A Final Word

If you’ve ever felt lost, judged, overwhelmed, or dismissed in your diabetes journey, you’re not alone.

And you’re not the problem.

You just haven’t been given the clarity you deserve.

I’m here to change that — one conversation at a time.

Empathy. Clarity. Action.
