5 tips for a better blood test

1. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water right up to 30 minutes before your appointment.

This helps improve blood flow, making your veins more accessible.

Avoid strenuous exercise before your blood test.

2. Loose clothing

Wear clothing that allows easy access to your arms.

3. Manage anxiety

If you have a problem at the sight of blood or having bloods taken causes anxiety.

Let us know and we would always encourage you to look away.

I will give longer appointments if there is an issue, but please let us know prior to your appointment

4. Know your risk of fainting

If you’re prone to fainting, make sure to inform us on booking, so we can minimise the risk.

Hydration is the key before coming.  It helps maintain blood pressure and reduce the risk of fainting.

5. Discuss difficult veins

Some people have smaller or scarred veins, often due to repeated punctures, chemotherapy or blood thinner use.

In such cases, we may require to do multiple attempts.

It is important to talk to us prior to the appointment as it makes it easier, both for you and for us.

Communication is the key to a successful blood taking.
